Standing on Their Shoulders is a project designed to preserve the heritage of Black English speakers in Little Burgundy and to create a new generation of “griots” or cultural interpreters.

The first phase focused on teaching the youth in the community the history they knew so little about through workshops, Walking tours, meetings with the elders of the community and other cultural activities sensitized the youth to their heritage.

Twenty-six of those Black youth have taken the opportunity to preserve this history, by becoming new cultural interpreters. These participants worked very hard with the ‘Standing on Their Shoulders’ team to direct their own short videos, edited by Great Things Studios. These 20 videos each capture a different historical aspect of the community over the past 200 years, told through many artistic forms by these talented Black youth.
